He Took His Ryan Monoplane 200 Horsewright Whirlwind Engine By Boat To Skagway, Erected His Machine, Cleared The Beach Of Rocks And Took Off At Tide To Fly Over The Trail Of '98 To Dawson Citiy. He Was General Manager Of Yukon Airways In 1927. He Was Hired By Western Canada Airways In 1928. Then He Started With Wca And Served On Every Station Of Wca Including Flying School Superintendent Of Prince George Base In June 1929. Seen Here Playing With A Dog While He Was In Charge Of The Aircraft On The Macalpine Rescue Expedition When A Party Of Prospectors Were Stranded On The Shores Of The Arctic Ocean. He Flew On The Fisheries Patrol, The Prairie Air Mail, And The Mackenzie River Run, 1500 Miles, Mcmurray To Aklavik. He Died In A Crash In Service Of Cal In 1932 With Engineers H.J King & H.W. Torrie In Nt |

He Attended The University Of Alberta In 1917, And Enlisted In The 196th Western Universities' Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, And Later Transferred To The Royal Flying Corps Receiving A Commission As A Second Lt. He Arrived In France In April 1918, And Reported For Duty With 211 Squadron Attached To The British Third And Fourth Armies. He Was Awarded Dfc (Distinguished Flying Cross) For Gallantry. He Returned To Canada In May 1919. Then This Former Teenage Fighter Pilot Joined The Canadian Air Force In 1921. He Joined Western Canada Airways In 1927. While Chief Pilot Of Wca, Winnipeg, Mb. He Received The Second Award Of The Trans Canada Trophy For Meritorious Service In The Advancement Of Aviation In Canada During 1928, In Recognition Of His Work In Organizing Air Service To Canada In Outlying Districts. He Received Obe (Order Of The British Empire) In 1936, And Was Named Member Of Canadian Aviation Hall Of Fame In 1973 |

He Was A Pilot At Sioux Lookout, Lac Du Bonnet And Was Assigned To Prairie Air Mail Run From Regina To Edmonton. In 1932 He Took A Course In Blind Flying At Camp Borden. He Was One Of The Founders Of Wings Ltd And Continued With Wings As General Manager, Then Was Appointed General Superintendent Of Cenral District, Canadian Pacific Airlines January 1942. In June 1942 He Was Manager Of Cal Engine Overhaul Plant At Stevenson Field, Winnipeg. He Was Later Associated With Central Northern Airways. In April, 1956 He Was Elected Chairman Of The Board Of Trans Air Ltd |

William Harold Coates, Born October 7,1903 In Brussels, On. He Entered Aviation Through The Rcaf, Then The Ontario Forestry Branch (Opas). From 1927 To 1944 He Was Engaged In Canadian Aviation Mainly In Ontario And Quebec. His First Job Was To Organize And Install A Store System For The Company At Bases At St. Huber, Quebec, St. John And Moncton. Next He Was Appointed As Assistant To Establish Air Mail Maintenance And Servicing Division. In 1930 He Was Appointed Assistant Operations And Manager Of Air Mail Division. When Quebec Airway Was Formed In 1934 He Acted As Traffic Agent For Them. He Was Appointed Treasurer For Them. While Working With The Maintenance Department At St. Hubert In 1930 & 1931, He Qualified For His Commercial Pilots Certificate. He Spent One Year In Aerodynamic Research At The U Of T., And A Winter As Pilot With Rcaf At Camp Borden. He Returned To Professional Engineering After Leaving Cpa And Retired In Late 1969. He Moved To Bc In 1970 |
