He Received His Medical Education In Edinburgh In 1817 - 1819 But Interrupted His Studies In 1819 To Return To Canada Where He Served Hbc Until 1823. He Married Catherine Thomas. They Had 3 Sons. He Resumed Studies At Edinburgh University In 1831 - 1832 And Returned To Practise In Middlechurch, Mb. He Was The First Native Born Physcian To Serve Red River Colony. He Was A Member Of The Council Of Assiniboia In 1835. He Died May 3, 1861 At Upper Fort Garry |

The Original Hudson'S Bay Company Trading Post And Dwelling House With A Tent And Another Building Between. Daniel Harman, Officer Of The North West Company At Fort Alexandria On The Upper Assiniboine, Wrote Of Portage La Prairie On May1st, 1805: "Here The North West Company Have A Miserable Fort, The Local Site Of Which Is Beautiful Beyond Anything I Have Seen In This Part Of The World." The Coalition Of The Northwest Company And The Hudson Bay Company Was Effected In 1821, And In 1832 The Hudson Bay Re-Established At Portage La Prairie, Building A Trading Post On The Site Of La Verendrye'S Fort. In The Rebellion Of 1869 - 1870, The Employees Of The Hbc Post Were Taken Prisoners By Emissaries Of Louis Riel And The Store Was Looted. Some Years Later The Company Discontinued Operation On This Site And The Property Was Converted Into A Farmhouse. The Hand Hewn Log Building Of The Store Was Still Standing When The Farm Was Purchased By Mr. Donald H. Bain In 1943 |
