24845 A0831 Winnipeg Tribune Collection     Fort Rouge School, River Avenue at Main Street was the oldest school in use in Winnipeg when it was replaced by a new modern structure located behind it. This school (seen in photo) was built in 1891 by John S. Gervin at a cost of $10, 800. Although the original oil lamps and drinking water buckets were modernized, the "Rube Goldberg" type of plumbing and the cord wood burning twin furnaces served until the end. This school was demolished following a reunion of teachers and pupils in March 1954. Sign on building reads "Fort Rouge Public School 1891". The Union Jack Flag flies above its roof.  FlagsSchoolsWinnipeg Buildings c. 1954

One of the signs on the building reads "Nels Todd Hair Stylist". Note the fire escapes on the side of the building. The Kensington Building appeared in the Henderson Directory in 1906 and it may have been bought by L.A. Oldfield, who bought several downtown properties while he lived in England. He died in Winnipeg in 1929. In 1946, his executors called for cash tenders for the purchase of the block. That was the first time Portage Avenue property had been sold in that manner. It was sold to Ernest Cholakis of Broadway Florists. He died in 1971 but his son Leo and other members of the family firm built a high rise building on the site and this building was called the Kensington Building also.  AutomobilesBusinessesWinnipeg BuildingsWinnipeg Streets c. 1955
