description: Sketch Of Col. William Osborne Smith, D.A.G. From A , Notman As It Appeared In Canadian Illustrated News. Smith Was Born In Ireland In 1831. He Had A Military Education And Served In Crimean War, Coming To Canada Withhis Regiment. In Montreal He Organized The Victoria Rifles In 1861 And Became Lt. Colonel. He Came To Manitoba In 1872 And Became Deputy Adjutant General For Manitoba And Nwt. Military District #10 Was Created In 1872 And In 1873 Fort Osborne Barracks, Named After Him, Was Located Where The Legislative Building Now Stand In 2002. During The North West Rebellion In 1885 He Raised The Winnipeg Light Infantry, Later Known As The 91st Battalion. He Lived In Winnipeg Until Shortly Before His Death. He Died In Wales In May 1887
