2473 A0079 Archives of Manitoba     Canada Was Divided Into Upper And Lower Canada, By The Constitutional Act Of 1791, To Allow Both English And French To Maintain Their Heritages And Traditions Of Government. John Graves Simcoe, A Revolutionary War Veteran, Was Selected Lieutenant Governor Of The New Province Of Upper Canada. His Induction Was Celebrated On July 18, 1892 At Kingston. The Executive Council Met In A Small Building Which Had Been Moved Across The Ice To Kingston Several Winter Before From Carleton Island (Now New York State). The Building Was Saved Because Of Its Historic Interest And Was Later Restored At Upper Canada Village Near Morrisburg. Lieutenant Governor Simcoe On A Horse, Is Seen In Full Dress Receiving A Salute From An Honour Guard Of Northumberland Fusiliers Outside Navy Hall, His Office And Residence. On September 17, 1792, The First Parliament Opened In Freemason'S Hall, Adjoining Wilson'S Tavern. King Henry Vii (Of England) And The Merchants Of Bristol Financed His Voyages To Find Such A Route But He Was Unsuccessful. In 1493, Word Reached England That Christopher Columbus Had Discovered America The Year Before. So Cabot Decided To Try Again. In 1497 With A Crew Of 18 Aboard The Tiny Ship "Mathew" & His Son Sebastian He Reached What He Thought Was The Coast Of Asia. Actually It Was The Coast Of What Is Now Canada. 24845 A0831 Winnipeg Tribune Collection     Fort Rouge School, River Avenue at Main Street was the oldest school in use in Winnipeg when it was replaced by a new modern structure located behind it. This school (seen in photo) was built in 1891 by John S. Gervin at a cost of $10, 800. Although the original oil lamps and drinking water buckets were modernized, the "Rube Goldberg" type of plumbing and the cord wood burning twin furnaces served until the end. This school was demolished following a reunion of teachers and pupils in March 1954. Sign on building reads "Fort Rouge Public School 1891". In 1869, Two Traders From Fort Benton, Joe Healy And Al Hamilton, Built A Trading Post At The Junction Of The Belly And St. Mary'S Rivers, Southwest Of The Present City Of Lethbridge, Ab. The Following Year, It Was Partially Burned By Fire And A New Building Was Constructed About 300 Feet North Of The Original Site. First Called Fort Hamilton, It Was Soon Known As Fort Whoop-Up, The Most Notorious Of The Whiskey Forts Where Whiskey Pedlars And Other Unscrupulous White Men Traded With The Indians (Aboriginals). Cartier Is Seen Here Bartering With Indians He Met In 1534 With Perce Rock In The Background. On July 24th He Planted A 30 Foot Cross With The Fleur-De-Lis Flag And The Words "Vive Le Roy De France" (Long Live The King Of France). On His Second Trip From France In 1535 Up The St. Lawrence As Far As Hochelaga (Now Montreal) Many Of His Men Were Decimated By Scurvy So He Returned To France.
