The Nwmp Also Found Lost Travellers And Even Delivered The Mail To Scattered Gold Camps. They Covered About 64,000 Miles In A Single Year For Mail Duty

Later On September 10, 1768, William Wales And Joseph Dymond Recored The First Known Instrumented Meteorological Readings In Canada. The North West Mounted Police barracks were on the northern hills; the police reserve is now part of the Municipal Golf Links. The House of Colonel MacDonald, Indian Agent under the Treaty of Qu'Appelle, and the store of the Mowat brothers, first rivals of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Qu'Appelle, are along the trail to the east. First Called Fort Hamilton, It Was Soon Known As Fort Whoop-Up, The Most Notorious Of The Whiskey Forts Where Whiskey Pedlars And Other Unscrupulous White Men Traded With The Indians (Aboriginals). Here A Group Of Blood Indians Are Shown Outside The Fort While Overhead Flies The Flag Of One Of The Trading Companies

The detachment was isolated. It was surrounded by Reserves and the nearest post was more than 100 miles away down the Saskatchewan River at Battleford, Saskatchewan.
