description: Ross House On Higgins Avenue Is The Oldest Post Office In Western Canada (Now Preserved As A Museum). Ross House Was Built In 1954, It Was The New Log Home Of William Ross, Son Of Chief Trader Alexander Ross Of The Hudson'S Bay Co. William Ross Was Appointed Postmaster The Following Year So He Set Aside One Room Of His House As Post Office. Mail At That Time Came By Canoe Or Dog Team, And Later By Stagecoach From The United States. On January 8, 1879 The Last Mail By Stagecoach Arrived In Winnipeg. The Following Morning The First Mail By Train Left St. Boniface. It Went By Way Of The Us Until 1884 When The Portion Of The Canadian Pacific Railway Between Winnipeg And The East Was Completed.
