314 A0010 Archives of Manitoba     On March1,1886, The First Cpr Depot In Winniipeg Burned To The Ground In A Fire That Started At 2 A.M. The Fire Was Spotted By Winnipeg Policeman, Timothy Madden, Who Tried To Turn In An Alarm From A Nearby Box. Unfortunately The Weight In The Box Fell Off As He Pulled It And He Had To Run To The New Rossin Hotel To Telephone For The Fire Brigade. The Loss Of Time Gave The Flames A Head Start Before The Firemen Could Reach The Scene. Total Loss Was Over $200,000 Of Which Some $50,000 Was Covered By Insurance. Three Years Before, Almost To The Day, March 2, 1883, The Weekly Free Press Had Announced The Opening Of The Fine New Station. Previously The Terminus Had Been In St. Boniface  RailwaysStationsWinnipeg Buildings 1884c
