21007 A0690 Thorlakson Manitoba Medical College Collection   Clearwater Lake Hospital, situated on shores of Clearwater Lake, 20 miles north of The Pas, Manitoba.  In early 1945, the Sanatorium Board of Manitoba assumed responsibility for the management and operation of the Clearwater Lake Hospital on behalf of the Department of National Health and Welfare for treatment of tuberculosis, primarily in the aboriginal population. The hospital, originally built as an advance base hospital for the US Armed Forces in the early 1940s, was modified and expanded with the addition of staff housing and a modern recreation centre, Northwood Hall. Over the next 20 years the facility processed over 7000 patients. In 1958 a portion of the facility was designated as an extended treatment hospital for the treatment of non-tuberculous, chronic diseases. Almost 5000 patients received the benefits of active therapy in this facility. In the area of tuberculosis control, several hundred thousand X-ray films were interpreted. On February 4, 1965, the last patients were sent to Ninette Sanatorium, Ninette, Manitoba, and the Clearwater Lake Hospital was demolished.  BuildingsHospitalsInuit 1950c
