"Group of Rebel Leaders". |
Illustration of Louis Riel on horseback during the aborted Fenian raids of 1871, with a group of Metis and aboriginal people with guns and tomahawks. Lt. Governor Archibald asked Archbishop Tache to approach Riel for assistance from the Metis in the defense of Manitoba against the impending Fenian raids, even though Riel had been labeled a traitor for leading the Resistance of 1869 to 1870. The Metis man on the far right is wearing the typical sash and leggings. Note the different clothing. Dogs are also in the image. |

Bytown (On The Ottawa River) As Seen From Parliament Hill. Bytown Was Later Named Ottawa. Note The Sail Boats And The Buildings In The Left Background. The Ottawa River Was A Highway From Quebec To The Interior For Indians, Traders, And Explorers. In 1800 When Lumbering Became Important, Philemon Wright Set Up A Sawmill Settlement At Chaudiere Falls Which Later Became Hull. Across The River, No Construction Took Place Until Colonel By Arrived With His Royal Engineers In 1826 To Construct The 131 Mile Rideau Canal To Kingston. The Community (Shown In This Image From The Painting By J.D. Kelly) Which Arose Was Named Bytown After Colonel By. On January 1, 1855, It Was Named Ottawa. The United Canada Had Alternated Its Capital Between Key Cities Until 1858. Queen Victoria Decided That Ottawa Represented The Two Basic Cultures Of English And French And Named Ottawa (Formally Bytown) As The Capital. It Has Remained The Capital Since Then. Canada'S Capital Region Now Covers 1,800 Square Miles And Extends Beyond Ottawa In The Province Of Ontario And Adjoining Hull In The Province Of Quebec |

Georges Racette, a Metis man, in traditional Metis dress with floral embroidery on coat. |
Known as "the Shaman", George was born in the Red River Settlement in 1819. He was over six feet tall, a skilled hunter, fighter, horseman, and trader. He was known as a rogue and a troublemaker, yet he played a key role in the significant events of his time. In 1873 he and others established a council in the Qu'appelle Valley with the intention of establishing a government. Since they were uneducated men they awaited the arrival of Louis Riel to assist them. In 1873 at James McKay's request, he spent the Winter travelling among the American Metis and aboroginals who planned to enter Canada to join forces with Canadian Metis and aboriginals in an effort to push white settlement from the plains. Shaman advised them that they could find themselves unwelcome in both countries and obtained their signatures and their promise to remain south of the border in the USA. In 1874 he represented the Assiniboine at the negotiations of Treaty No. 4. His display of military strength and his strong position during the negotiations led to his being overpowered, handcuffed, and kept under guard in a tent during the proceedings. He was released only when he promised to leave the area. |

Red River Carts Leaving Upper Fort Garry. Upper Fort Garry, Shown Here In A Hudson'S Bay Company Sketch (1863), Was To Be Demolished, According To An Hbc Decree Made Public Jan.10, 1880. Erected In 1835, The Fort Replaced An Earlier One Near The Same Site Which Had Served As The Local Headquarters Of The Company Since Its Amalgamation With The North West Company In 1821.For Many Years It Had Been A Fort In Name Only, Its History Bound Up With That Of The Colony At The Forks Of The Red And Assiniboine Rivers. The Gate Was Preserved For Posterity When The Fort Was Demolished A Few Years Later To Allow Main Street To Run Straight To The Assiniboine River Without Jogging Around The Historic Old Place |

The Linking Of The Lake Ontario And Lake Erie For Commercial Shipping. The First Shovel Was Turned On November 30, 1824 By William Hamilton Merritt'S Welland Canada Co. Overcoming A Fall Of 325 Feet In The Niagara River, The Canal Was Designed To Convey Small Craft From Lake Ontario To Port Robinson, About Halfway, And By Way Of The Welland And Niagara Rivers To Lake Erie. Swift Currents Forced Abandonment Of The Latter Portion And The Canal Was Extended Across Country In 1833 To Bravelly Bay, Now Port Colborne. The Route Has Been Changed, Locks Reduced In Number And Increased In Size. The Welland Canal Has Proved Increasingly Valuable In The 2,300 Mile Waterway Into The Heart Of The Continent. November 27, 1829, Was The Grand Opening Ceremony Of The Welland Canal, Seen In This Photo From The Painting By J.D. Kelly |
