He Managed The New York Team From1932-1935, Then The New Haven Eagles For One Season And The Minneapolis Millers For Two Seasons. He Later Lived In Coral Gables, Florida |

He Was Born In Winnipeg On April 2, 1881; Educated At Wesley College And The University Of Manitoba, From Where He Received A Bachelor Of Arts Degree In 1900. That Same Year He Began His Newspaper Career At The Free Press. In 1919 He Left The Free Press To Become Advertising Manager To The Grain Growers Guide. He Subsequently Organized And Joined The Macpherson, Mcurdy Advertising Agency. Returning To The Newspaper Business In 1913, He Became Director, Secretary- Treasurer, And Assistant To The General Manager At The Free Press. Mccurdy Was Business Manager Of The Tribune In 1924 And Was Appointed Vice-President And Managing Director In 1936. In 1942 He Was Named Vice- President Of The Southam Company And Publisher Of The Tribune. He Retired From The Tribune In 1948 After 48 Years In The Advertising And Publishing Business In Wiinnipeg. First Part Of A Panoramic Photo Of His Royal Highness, The Duke Of Connaught, Governor-General Of Canada, Reviewing The Troops At Camp Sewell In Manitoba. The Duke Accompanied By His Suite And The Canadian Mounted Rifles Arrived At The Camp Sewell With Col. Elliott, Commandant Of The Camp. The Duke Inspected The Troops, Of Whom There Were About 3,500, For Over An Hour. The Number Of Troops Was Comparatively Small Because The Duke Had Suggested Troops Assist In The Bountiful Harvest. Following The Inspection, A March Past Took Place. The Duke, Surrounded By A Large Number Of Officers, Was Beside A Royal Standard, While The Troops Marched Past. The Troops Were The Fort Garry Horse, 44th, 45th, 46th, 53rd, 61st, 78th The Winnipeg Grenadiers (The Outstanding Regiment Both In Numbers, Over 1000 And In General Appearance, 79th (This Battalion Of 500 Came From Brandon And Had Trained Only For 6 Weeks But Did Very Well), 9th And 10th Canadian Mounted Rifles, 37th And 38th Field Battery, Army Service Corps And The Field Ambulance Corps. Hudson Bay Railway Construction Between Present Day Gillam And Kettle Rapids - Much Of The Embankment Was Built With Muskeg Shovelled Into Barrows And Pushed Up Plank Runways To The Formation. These Workeres Were Called "Stationmen", The Majority Recently Arrived Immigrants. They Walked From The Railhead, 100 Or More Miles To The Contractor'S Cache Nearest To The Job Where They Were Issued Basic Tools Such As Axes, Shovels, Picks Barrow Wheels, Tin Stove, Few Nails And Groceries, Mostly Flour, Sowbelly, And Beans. Then It Was Up To Them To Build A Shelter, Hew Planks And Carry On. "Stationmen" Worked As Small Sub-Contractors, Up To 16 Hours For 6 And At Times 7 Days A Week, Surrounded By Hordes Of Mosquitoes And Black Flies. To Excavate Essential Drainage Ditches It Was Necessary To Chop Out Permafrost |
