Andrew (Andy) David Cruikshank, Pilot, Born February 26,1898 At Oxford England. He Served In Ww I February 1915 To June 1919. He Joined Raf In 1917. He Had Flown Commericially In Canada, Usa, Mexico And Yukon. He Took His Ryan Monoplane 200 Horsewright Whirlwind Engine By Boat To Skagway, Erected His Machine, Cleared The Beach Of Rocks And Took Off At Tide To Fly Over The Trail Of '98 To Dawson Citiy. He Was General Manager Of Yukon Airways In 1927. He Was Hired By Western Canada Airways In 1928. Then He Started With Wca And Served On Every Station Of Wca Including Flying School Superintendent Of Prince George Base In June 1929. Seen Here Playing With A Dog While He Was In Charge Of The Aircraft On The Macalpine Rescue Expedition When A Party Of Prospectors Were Stranded On The Shores Of The Arctic Ocean. He Flew On The Fisheries Patrol, The Prairie Air Mail, And The Mackenzie River Run, 1500 Miles, Mcmurray To Aklavik. He Died In A Crash In Service Of Cal In 1932 With Engineers H.J King & H.W. Torrie In Nt |

He Attended The University Of Alberta In 1917, And Enlisted In The 196th Western Universities' Battalion, Canadian Expeditionary Force, And Later Transferred To The Royal Flying Corps Receiving A Commission As A Second Lt. He Arrived In France In April 1918, And Reported For Duty With 211 Squadron Attached To The British Third And Fourth Armies. He Was Awarded Dfc (Distinguished Flying Cross) For Gallantry. He Returned To Canada In May 1919. Then This Former Teenage Fighter Pilot Joined The Canadian Air Force In 1921. He Joined Western Canada Airways In 1927. While Chief Pilot Of Wca, Winnipeg, Mb. He Received The Second Award Of The Trans Canada Trophy For Meritorious Service In The Advancement Of Aviation In Canada During 1928, In Recognition Of His Work In Organizing Air Service To Canada In Outlying Districts. He Received Obe (Order Of The British Empire) In 1936, And Was Named Member Of Canadian Aviation Hall Of Fame In 1973 |

He Worked At The Engine Shop On Brandon Avenue In Winnipeg In July 1929. He Was A Pilot With Prairie Air Mail Service In 1930 And 1931. He Did Considerable Work For The Company Around The Machines On Operation From An Engineering Standpoint. In 1936 He Was Employed As A Full Time Pilot In Lac Du Bonnet. In May 1937 He Was Transferred To Red Lake To Take Charge Of The Red Lake Base Temporarily. He Remained A Pilot At Lac Du Bonnet Until June 15, 1940 When He Left Canadian Airways Ltd To Join Prairie Pacific Airlines And Eventually Became Captain On Transpacific & Atlantic Services |
