Aboriginal camp at Oxford House, Manitoba with a York Boat in the water fitted for sail, and to the right a person with an axe. |
The canoes are Western Woods Cree showing an Ojibway style influence in the protruding prows, which was often the case. The traditional Cree design had a straighter stem, more common for calm water areas. This same general model was shared with the Western Woods Cree, Swampy Cree, James Bay Cree, and the Montagnais. |

Survey Camp, Showing Red River Carts And Tents At North Antler River..The Use Of The Metis Red River Cart (Two-Wheeled Cart) Proved To Be Indispensable For Pulling Heavy Loads Over Difficult Terrain. Camp Morton Chapel. The Camp Was Built In 1920 For Roman Catholic Children As A Summer Outdoor Religious Camp. It Was Named After Right Reverend Monsignor Thomas W. Morton, Its Founder And Developer. This Chapel Was One Of The First Buildings Erected And Was The Focal Point Of Camp Activity. The Original Building Was Of A Simple Design With A Cathedral Ceiling. Later The Sides Were Extended And The Interior Finished With Fir Boards. Stones From The Beach Were Cemented To Form The Italian Design For The Facade |

Camp Morton Water Tower. The Inlaid Work Decorating The Water Tower And Engine Room Disguises The Original Purpose Of These Two Buildings. Machinery Pumped Water From Lake Winnipeg To The Large Tower Tank, Which Supplied Water For Drinking And For The Gardens Of Camp Morton. The Frame Of The Water Tower Was Probably Built In The Late 1920s. A Stone Facade Was Added In 1937 And Was Trimmed With Nickel Disks Depicting The Heads Of King George Vi And Queen Elizabeth |

Metis Camp With Red River Carts And Rack Used For Drying Buffalo Meat To Make Into Pemmican. The Meat Was Cut Into Strips And Hung To Dry On Racks. This Process Made It Easy To Transport, And It Was Later Pounded Into A Powder-Like Form. Then Depending On The Season, Berries Might Be Added Later To Make It More Palatable. For Long-Lasting Storage And Transportation, The Dried Meat Pounded Into Powder Was Poured Into Bags Made Of Uncured Buffalo Hides. A Quantity Of Liquid Fat And Marrow Was Added Plus Wild Berries (Most Often Saskatoons) When They Were In Season Then The Bag Was Sewn Shut. A Child Is Seen Here Heating A Pot Over A Fire.
