description: Fire On December 31, 1923, Started By An Overheated Furnace, Around 6 P.M. At The 5 Storey Building Of Tees & Perse Manufactures Agents & John Martin Paper Co., 315 William Avenue, Wpg. Stocks Of Matches Were Stored In The Building. Although Firemen Were On The Scene Moments After The Alarm Was Given, As Soon As The Fire Reached The Inflammable Stocks Of Matches, It Was Apparent The Premises Were Doomed. The Firemen Under The Direction Of Fire Chief Buchanan Were Not Able To Save The Building But Were Able To Keep The Fire From Spreading To The Henderson Block Which Was Separated From The Burning Building By A Narrow Lane. The Henderson Block Contained A Branch Of The Bank Of Hamilton On The Main Floor, And Apartment Suites On The Upper Floors
