description: Uniformed Firefighters Of The Private Brigade Of The J.Y. Griffin And Company Pork Packing Plant In Elmwood At Work Using Hoses On A Set Of Wheels. This Brigade Saved The Main Building Of The Company During A Fire That Demolished An Earlier Wooden Section. Winnipeg City Firemen Assisted, Running A Hose Line Across The Elmwood Bridge (The Hoses In This Photo No Doubt). The Fire Was Very Hot With Several Thousand Pounds Of Lard Adding To The Conflagration. The Firm Was Established In 1885 On Mcdermot Avenue And Moved To Elmwood In 1897. It Then Had The Capacity Of Processing 800 Hogs A Day As Well As Large Quantities Of Eggs, Butter And Cheese Using Ice Refrigeration. In 1903 The Large Brick Addition Was Erected. In It Ammonia Freezing Was Used For The First Time In Winnipeg. The Firm Belonged To Swift Canadian Co Until 1939, When The Firm'S Headquarters Moved To St. Boniface
