description: Metis Camp With Red River Carts And Rack Used For Drying Buffalo Meat To Make Into Pemmican. The Meat Was Cut Into Strips And Hung To Dry On Racks. This Process Made It Easy To Transport, And It Was Later Pounded Into A Powder-Like Form. Then Depending On The Season, Berries Might Be Added Later To Make It More Palatable. For Long-Lasting Storage And Transportation, The Dried Meat Pounded Into Powder Was Poured Into Bags Made Of Uncured Buffalo Hides. A Quantity Of Liquid Fat And Marrow Was Added Plus Wild Berries (Most Often Saskatoons) When They Were In Season Then The Bag Was Sewn Shut. A Child Is Seen Here Heating A Pot Over A Fire.
