description: Dr. James Kerr, Born 1848 In Roselick, Port Stewart, County Antrim, Ireland. Received Md, Ms From Queen'S University, Belfast In 1870. Became Surgeon To Londonderry Iron Mines In Nova Scotia Where He Remained For 5 Years. Applying Listerian Principles For Surgery, Kerr Made A Name For Himself. Kerr Went On To Winnipeg And Set Up A Practice In 1880 And Moved His Family Into The Only Brick House In Winnipeg, At Donald And Graham. He Confined All His Effort To Surgery And Became A Surgeon To The Winnipeg General Hospital, Physician To The Maternity Hospital And The Children'S Home As Well As Chief Surgeon To The Cpr. In 1882 He Was Medical Officer Of Health For The City At $!200 Per Year; And For The Provincial Government To Check On Health Of Immigrants. The Manitoba Medical College Building Completed In 1884 Had Dr. Kerr As Its First Dean. In 1885 Metis Under Riel Rebelled A 2nd Time And Dr. Kerr Was Surgeon Major To Command The Base Hospital At The Winnipeg General Hospital. He Later Went To George Washington University On Staff. His Health Deteriorated And He Bought An Estate "Antrim" In Virginia And Bred Horses. He Died February 2, 1911
