description: Dr. Ian Maclaren Thompson; Born In Newfoundland Sept. 13, 1896; Received Bsc & Mb Ch B In 1920 After Serving As Surgeon Probationer In Rnvr In First World War And Was Wounded In The Sinking Of Hms "Strongborn". In 1920 He Joined The Dept Of Anatomy At Mcgill University In 1920; Formed Dept Of Anatomy At University Of California At Berkley In 1927 Where He Was Prof And Chairman Of The Division. In 1937 He Joined The Faculty Of Medicine At The University Of Manitoba As Professor And Chairman Of Dept Of Anatomy Where He Remained Until His Retirement In 1965. Following Retirement He Became The Secretary Of The Winnipeg Clinic Research Institute. He Made A Major Contribution To The Knowledge Of Bile Ducts And The Hepatic And Cystic Arteries. He Has Many Publications. His Honours Included: D. Sr From U Of Manitoba In 1972 And The Jcb Grant Award From The Canadian Assoc. Of Anatomists In 1980. He Was A Fellow Of The Royal Society Of Canada In 1947 And A Fellow Of The Royal Society Of Edinburgh In 1953. He Died Dec 26, 1981.
