description: Image from a painting by J.D. Kelly. On his last voyage to find the North West Passage, Captain James Cook spent two months at Nootka Sound, Vancouver Island repairing his ships "Resolution" and "Discovery." While visiting an aboriginal village he watched the people there building a dugout canoe from a huge cedar log with stones, hatchets, adzes, and fire. He also noted their crafts of bird and animal masks. In the background is Captain Cook's ship, and the mountains.
