description: Between 4 & 5 P.M. Some 200 Specials Armed With Wagon Spokes And Baseball Bats, Are Seen Marching West Along Portage Avenue After Clearing Portage And Main Streets, Past The Oldfield Kirby And Gardiner Building. As The Specials Marched On Crowds, Bats, Fists, Stones, Bricks And Broken Bottles Began To Fly. Mayor Gray Had Told The Leader Of The Mounted Specials That He Would Shortly Read The Riot Act And That Would Enable The Royal Northwest Mounted Police To Be Brought In And Firearms To Be Used If Necessary. Thus He Almost Precipitated The Bloodbath That Would Finally Occur Eleven Days Later
