Lt. Governor Archibald asked Archbishop Tache to approach Riel for assistance from the Metis in the defense of Manitoba against the impending Fenian raids, even though Riel had been labeled a traitor for leading the Resistance of 1869 to 1870. He Became Head Of The Metis Community There & Organized The Great Buffalo Hunts. He Was Was One Of The 4- Man Delegation Who Rode To Montana To Bring Louis Riel Back To Canada In 1884. He Joined Riel'S Provisional Government As Adjutant General. The Rebellion Of 1885 Broke Out In March When His "Army" A Detachment Of Nwmp Under Superintendent Crozier At Duck Lake, After Preliminary Skirmish At Fish Creek In April The Metis Under Dumont Were Finally Defeated In May At Batoche By Greatly Superior Forces Under General Middleton. Dumont Fled To Montana & Lived Several Years In Various Parts Of The Usa Until The Granting Of An Amnesty Allowed Him To Return To The Vicinity Of Batoche. 513 A0017 Archives of Manitoba Ryder Larsen   Georges Racette, a Metis man, in traditional Metis dress with floral embroidery on coat.  Known as "the Shaman", George was born in the Red River Settlement in 1819. He was over six feet tall, a skilled hunter, fighter, horseman, and trader. He was known as a rogue and a troublemaker, yet he played a key role in the significant events of his time. In 1873 he and others established a council in the Qu'appelle Valley with the intention of establishing a government. Since they were uneducated men they awaited the arrival of Louis Riel to assist them. In 1873 at James McKay's request, he spent the Winter travelling among the American Metis and aboroginals who planned to enter Canada to join forces with Canadian Metis and aboriginals in an effort to push white settlement from the plains. Shaman advised them that they could find themselves unwelcome in both countries and obtained their signatures and their promise to remain south of the border in the USA. In 1874 he represented the Assiniboine at the negotiations of Treaty No. 4. His display of military strength and his strong position during the negotiations led to his being overpowered, handcuffed, and kept under guard in a tent during the proceedings. 58821 A1805 Kathleen Chisholm Collection     Honourable John Norquay (1841-1889) Ex-Premier Of Manitoba. He Was Born At St. Andrew'S To Isabella And John Norquay On May 8, 1841. His Parents Died When He Was Very Young And He Was Adopted By His Grandather, James Spence. He Was The Firstpremier Born In Manitoba From 1878 - 1887. First He Was A Teacher, Then In The Fur Trade, And Later A Farmer And A Politician. He Was Appointed A Member Of The Executive Council And Minister Of Public Works And Agriculture On December 14, 1871 Til 1874. Was Provicial Secretary In March 1875 And The Next Year Became Minister Of Public Works. He Formed The New Goverment And Held The Offices Of Premier, President Of The Executive Council And Provincial Treasurer. He Was Appointed Railway Commmissioner On Sept 1886.At The Time Of His Death He Was The Only Mla Who Had Continuously Held A Seat In The Legislative Assembly Since Its Inception. He Spoke Fluently In English, French, Cree And Saulteaux. He Was A Member Of The Manitoba Club, The Anglican Synod And Exec Committee Of Rupertsland. He Was Part Scotch. He Died On July 5, 1889. This Process Made It Easy To Transport, And It Was Later Pounded Into A Powder-Like Form. Then Depending On The Season, Berries Might Be Added Later To Make It More Palatable. For Long-Lasting Storage And Transportation, The Dried Meat Pounded Into Powder Was Poured Into Bags Made Of Uncured Buffalo Hides. A Quantity Of Liquid Fat And Marrow Was Added Plus Wild Berries (Most Often Saskatoons) When They Were In Season Then The Bag Was Sewn Shut. A Child Is Seen Here Heating A Pot Over A Fire. 6229 A0196 Oblate Fathers' Collection     Poundmaker. Until the battle of Cut Knife Creek, May 2nd, 1885, Poundmaker had been able to prevent his braves from joining the Metis but after his defeat of Otter's Troops he could no longer control their War Spirit. On May 26th, 1885, Poundmaker surrendered to General Middleton at Battleford, Saskatchewan. He was tried before Judge Richardson at Regina, Sasakatchewan in September, 1885, and was sentenced to three years at Stony Mountain. Poundmaker, also known as "The Drummer," was born a member of the Stoney Tribe (Saskatchewan) in c1842, but through his mother's family became associated with a Cree band near Battleford, Saskatchewan. Originally opposed to Treaty No. 6 in 1876, he later signed, but his disgruntlement with government in action on aboriginal needs was made evident when his band ransacked Battleford in 1885. The Mud Is Mixed With Straw & Used To Plaster Over The Logs In Walls And Improve Insulation. To Begin This Task, First A Hole Is Dug In The Ground To Get Below The Topsoil; Then The Hole Is Filled With Water And Selected Clay Is Added. The Men Mix This With Their Feet, Getting A Good Consistency With The Mud. Too Dense A Consistency Would Not Allow The Straw To Mix Well In The Mud And Too Thin Would Not Be Good Either Because It Would Lack Stability.
