Hudson's Bay Company post, on the south bank of the Qu'Appelle River. The North West Mounted Police barracks were on the northern hills; the police reserve is now part of the Municipal Golf Links. The House of Colonel MacDonald, Indian Agent under the Treaty of Qu'Appelle, and the store of the Mowat brothers, first rivals of the Hudson's Bay Company at Fort Qu'Appelle, are along the trail to the east. James Shaver Woodsworth, Born At Applewood Farm Near Toronto, On. July 29, 1874. Died In Vancouver, March 21, 1942. Son Of Rev. James Woodsworth And Esther Josephine Shaver. Educated For The Methodist Ministry At The University Of Manitoba (Ba 1896); Toronto (Bd 1900); And Oxford. In England He Visited City Missions And Slum Areas, Developed An Acute Social Conscience And Began To Question Some Of The Tenets Of His Church. He Returned To Canada And As A Student Pastor Centered The Home Mission Field. In 1907 He Was In Charge Of All Peoples' Mission In North Winnipeg. His Opposition To World War I And His Unorthodox Social Views Led To His Final Resignation From The Church In May Of 1919. He Was Editor Of The Strike Bulletin During The Winnipeg General Strike. He Won Winnipeg North Centre In Dec 1921 And Held It Until His Death. His Only Labour Colleagues Were William Irvine Of Calgary (Defeated In 1925) In His First Parliamentary Session And A.A. Heaps In His Second. He Provided The Vision And Leadership At The Founding Of The Ccf At Calgary In August 1932 And At The National Convention In Regina In 1933. In The 1935 General Election The Ccf Elected 7 Members And Woodsworth Became House Leader |

Rev & Mrs. James S. Nisbet, Missionary And His Wife Who Was Mary Macbeth, Daughter Of Hon. Robert Macbeth, A Member Of The Council Of Assiniboia. James Nisbet Was Born In The Parish Of Gorbals, Glasgow, The Son Of Thomas Nisbet, A Glasgow Shipbuilder. James At 15 Was A Sabbath School Superintendent. In 1845 He Came To Canada And Devoted Himself To The Ministry Entering Knox College, Toronto And Was Ordained As The First Pastor Of Oakville, Canada West In 1850. In 1862 He Was Sent To The Red River To Assist Rev. James Black. In 1864 He Married Mary Mcbeth. Under His Direction A New Stone Parish Schoolhouse Was Built That Served The Educational Needs Of Kildonan Until 1904. In 1866 He Was Appointed Missionalry To The Indians (Aboriginals) Of Saskatchewan. He Settled On The North Bank Of The Saskatchewan River At A Place He Named Prince Albert In Honour Of The Prince Consort Who Had Died. Then He Began Teaching The Aboriginals About A Settled Life. The Mission Attracted White Settlers And Prince Albert Became A Flourishing Settlement. Exhausted He And Mary Returned To Kildonan In 1874 And He Died September 30th. |

He Was Ordained As A Presbyterian Clergyman On July 31, 1851. Then He Settled In The Red River Settlement And Served On The Board Of Education In Manitoba From Its Inception Until A Few Years Before His Death On February 11, 1882 In Kildonan, Manitoba. Sainte-Marie, a mission headquarters of the Jesuits in Huronia (now Ontario). It was 800 miles by canoe from Quebec. Guarding it were stone bastions, timber palisades, and French soldiers. The Indian Compound included a longhouse, church, hospital, and cemetary. Men are seen erecting a large cross in front of the church. |

Samuel De Champlain In 1615, Was Instrumental In Having Father Joseph Le Caron Estabish A Mission In Huronia (The Most Densely Populated Part Of New France, Lying Between Georgian Bay And Lake Wimcoe In What Is Now Ontario). After Attending The First Mass At Carhagouha On August 12, Champlain And Etienne Brule Prpared To Join A Huron Excursion Against The Iroquois. This Photo, From A Painting By Rex Woods, Shows Them On Lake Wimcoe Near Orillia On September 8th. Taking Different Routes They Circled Lake Ontario. On October 10th, Before Brule Could Rendezvous With 500 Andastes Indians For An Attack From The Rear, Champlain Had Been Defeated Near Oneida Lake. Severely Wounded, He Recuperated In Huronia. Champlain And Father Le Caron Spent A Month Before Returning To Quebec In May 1616. Champlain Was Governor Until He Died In 1635 |
