Portage Of A Canoe. The Canoe Shown Here Was A Woods Or Pack Canoe Developed By The Malecite Indinas In Central And Southern New Brunswick. At One Time It Was Common From The East Coast Of Maine To The St. Lawrence River At Quebec. The High Peaked Ends Designed To Help The Canoe Double As A Shelter, Eventually Evolved To Straight Stems And A Lower Gunwale Line By The End Of The 19th Century.
