description: James Clouston came from Stromness in the Orkney Islands, Scotland and entered the Hudson's Bay Company's service in 1842 and sailed in the Company ship "Prince Rupert" to be employed in York Factory. He renewed his contract in 1847 for a further three years and in 1850 he renewed it for another three years. He was attached to Dr. Rae's Expedition of 1853-54 to West Boothia, but returned to York Fort. In 1885 he returned to Europe in the Company ship "Prince of Wales" in the Autumn. His share of H.M. Government's reward to Dr. Jon Rae for first ascertaining news of the fate of Sir John Franklin's pedition amounted to 60 pounds.
