description: Sainte-Marie, a mission headquarters of the Jesuits in Huronia (now Ontario). It was 800 miles by canoe from Quebec. Guarding it were stone bastions, timber palisades, and French soldiers. The Indian Compound included a longhouse, church, hospital, and cemetary. Men are seen erecting a large cross in front of the church.
