description: Paul Kane (1810-1871), portraitist and artist of aboriginal culture. He emigrated from Ireland to Toronto in 1819. He had some early training in Canada and Detroit. He worked in the USA from 1831-1841 before studying in Italy. He began painting aboriginals around the Great Lakes in 1845. From 1846-1848 he travelled across the continent with the help of Sir George Simpson and returned with many sketches, drawings, a journal of the trip, and a collection of artifacts. He painted many oil paintings. He sold one hundred to George Allen in 1852. He published "Wanderings of an Artist" which was illustrated with chromolithographs and engravings from his work (1859).
