The Kensington Building at 275 Portage Avenue at Smith Street in Winnipeg with cars and pedestrians in front. One of the signs on the building reads "Nels Todd Hair Stylist". Note the fire escapes on the side of the building. The Kensington Building appeared in the Henderson Directory in 1906 and it may have been bought by L.A. Oldfield, who bought several downtown properties while he lived in England. He died in Winnipeg in 1929. In 1946, his executors called for cash tenders for the purchase of the block. That was the first time Portage Avenue property had been sold in that manner. It was sold to Ernest Cholakis of Broadway Florists. He died in 1971 but his son Leo and other members of the family firm built a high rise building on the site and this building was called the Kensington Building also. |
