description: Joe was born at Chilliwack, British Columbia, daughter of William Andrew Commodore and Theresa Jean Prest, who were both Canadian aboriginals. She was educated at Alberni Indian Residential School, Hope High School and Vancouver Vocational College. She married Robert Joe and had 3 daughters. In 1963 she was a practical nurse. From 1969 to 1971 she was Vice-President of the Yukon Association of Non-Status Indians from 1975 - 1978; she was Chairman of the Yukon Indians and the Law Committee From 1975 - 1979. She was a member of the Board of the Yukon Indian Women's Association and of Ye-Sa-To Communications Society from 1975 - 1979. She was a player and coach of the Yukon Ladies Softball League. She was Justice of the Peace and Executive Secretary to the J.P. Council from 1980 to 1982. She was a committee member of the Skookum Jim Friendship Centre from 1969- 1971 and from 1982 -1985. She was elected to the Yukon Legislature on June 7, 1982, and re-elected on May 13, 1985. She was appointed Minister of Health and Human Resources on May 29, 1985. She was a member of the New Democratic Party. She lived in Whitehorse, Yukon Territories.
