A Dog Is In The Foreground In Front Of This Hide-Covered, Temporary Hunting Canoe. The Land Around Is Stony. The Moosehide Canoe Was Made By A Swampy Cree Trapper In The 1940s. This Type Of Canoe Was Made In The Spring In Northern Manitoba When The Small Creeks And Rivers Were Swollen And Bark Canoes Were Not In Common Use In These Areas. This One Was About Ten Feet Long And Was Probably Dismantled After About Three Weeks Use So The Hide Could Be Reused. Canoes Of This Type Could Be Made Quickly By Letting The Hide Dry To The Shape Desired Then Reinforced By A Network Of Willow Or Ash Limbs |

Aboriginal camp at Oxford House, Manitoba with a York Boat in the water fitted for sail, and to the right a person with an axe. |
The canoes are Western Woods Cree showing an Ojibway style influence in the protruding prows, which was often the case. The traditional Cree design had a straighter stem, more common for calm water areas. This same general model was shared with the Western Woods Cree, Swampy Cree, James Bay Cree, and the Montagnais. |

An aboriginal family building a birch bark canoe. |
Making a canoe was a family affair. Every Spring a family would have to decide how many and what kind of canoe they would need for that Summer. This canoe normally lasted two seasons of use. The canoe builder stripped the bark from the trees in early Spring, the women gathered spruce roots, peeled them and mixed spruce gum and ash to make the pitch used to waterproof the seams. The actual building of the canoes took six to eight weeks. Seen in the photo is the family with the bottom layer of birch bark weighted down between stakes that determine the shape of the canoe. The women and older children sew another layer of bark on each side to bring it to the proper height and seal the seams with pitch. The canoe builder will then fit stems and the preshaped gun whale, side and bottom slats, and then the preformed ribs. Final sewing and sealing is done by the women. |

Discovery Of Canada. John Cabot, Born In Genoa, Italy, And Apprenticed To A Great Trading House In Venice, Wanted To See The Far East. He Thought The Earth Was Round And Was Determined To Sail West Across The Atlantic In Search To The Route. King Henry Vii (Of England) And The Merchants Of Bristol Financed His Voyages To Find Such A Route But He Was Unsuccessful. In 1493, Word Reached England That Christopher Columbus Had Discovered America The Year Before. So Cabot Decided To Try Again. In 1497 With A Crew Of 18 Aboard The Tiny Ship "Mathew" & His Son Sebastian He Reached What He Thought Was The Coast Of Asia. Actually It Was The Coast Of What Is Now Canada. The Cross Of St. George (Flag) Was Unfurled There And Thus John Cabot And His Son Sebastian Planted The First British Flag On North America. Image From A Painting By J.K. Kelly |

Etah Inuit (Eskimo) In Kayak At Smith Sound, Nt., Between Ellesmere Island And Greenland. The Kayak May Be A Northern Greenland Type With A Flat Bottom And A U-Shaped Manhole. The Design Is More Stable Than The Oval Or V-Shaped Bottom But Not As Fast. In The Latter Designs An O-Shaped Or Oval Manhole Was Used To Ensure A Tighter Fit Around The Body Which Made It Watertight And Easier To Right In Case It Flipped Over |
