description: James Dickenson "Dick" Irvin, Outstanding Player And Coach, Was Born In July, 1892 At Limestone Ridge, Near Hamilton, On. He Moved To Winnipeg And Played Junior Hockey With The Strathconas And Then The Winnipeg Monarchs And In 1913 Led The Monarchs To The Allen Cup. The Monarchs Won The Allan Cup Again In 1915. Dick Turned Pro With Portland In 1914 - 1915, But Went Overseas On Active Duty In 1917. He Returned To Join The Regina Caps In 1921 And Played Four Years. In 1926, He Joined Portland And Scored 30 Goals During The 30 Game Season. Chicago Purchased Him And In The Ninth Game Of His Second Season He Suffered A Fractured Skull To End His Playing Career. He Coached Chicago For One And A Half Years, Then In 1931 He Joined Toronto In 1931, Winning The Stanley Cup. He Stayed With The Leafs Until 1940, Then Joined The Montreal Canadiens Where He Coached Until 1955, Winning Three Stanley Cups. He Closed His Coaching Career At Chicago The Nest Year. He Died In Montreal In May Of 1957
