Alexander Hunter Murray (1818-1874) Fur Trader & Explorer, Was Born At Kilmun, Argyleshire, Scotland, In 1818. As A Young Man He Emigrated Tothe United States And Served With The American Fur Company. He Married Anne Campbell, Daughter, Of Chief Trader Colin Campbell, Whom He Met On A Journey To The Athabasca District. They Had Eight Children. His Eldest Daughter Helen, Became The Wife Of Chief Trader W.J. (Big Bear) Mclean Of 1885 Rebellion Fame. In The Spring Of 1846 He Came Up To Fort Garry From Missouri, And Joined The Hbc As Senior Clerk. In 1847 Chief Factor Murdock Mcpherson Appointed Murray To The Mackenzie River District To Establish An Outpost At Fort Yukon, In Russian Alaska. In Later Years He Managed Several Hbc Posts And In 1856 Was Made Chief Trader. In 1862 He Was Placed In Charge Of Lower Fort Garry, Where He Remained Until 1864. He Retired From The Fur Trade In 1867 And Died At His Home, "Bellevue" Near Lower Fort Garry In April 1874 |

Military District #10 Was Created In 1872 And In 1873 Fort Osborne Barracks, Named After Him, Was Located Where The Legislative Building Now Stand In 2002. During The North West Rebellion In 1885 He Raised The Winnipeg Light Infantry, Later Known As The 91st Battalion. He Lived In Winnipeg Until Shortly Before His Death. He Died In Wales In May 1887 |
