A line of Manitoba Shooters with their Ross Rifles in the last Manitoba Provincial Rifles Association Annual Prize Meeting at a St. Charles Rifle Range, Winnipeg, Manitoba. |
Meeting was just before "The Guns Of August", the outbreak of the Great War. Note the shooters in suits with simple shooting equipment, rifle ammunition, score record book, binoculars for spotting shots, signalling and scoring. The register keepers are in the background with blackboards, and letters "D," "E," and "F." Note shooters #2, 3, and 4, are sighting right through English Martin target aperture receiver sights pinned to bridge of rifle breech and action. Note the long leather slings from muzzle swivel, through middle barrel band swivel and around left arm and attached to forward swivel in front of trigger guard. These men had no ear muff sound protectors, no 10x shooting jackets, and no shooting mitts, but they could shoot. |

A Man Is Standing With A Gun At The Site Of The "Reference Monument" Raised By David Thompson (British) On July 24 (Or 29), 1824, On The Most North Westerly Point Of Lake Of The Woods. The Surveyors Had Great Difficulty In Finding That Spot. This Site Was Designated By Treaty Of Ghent As Key To Boundary Between British North America (Canada) & The American States (Usa). The Site Was Endorsed By The Joint Boundary Commissioners On October 26, 1826. In The Formal Search By The Boundary Commission Of 1872, The Remnants Were Found In A Swamp On October 17, 1872 And The Famous Corner Was Commemorated As Shown Beside The Man. The Bushes At The Site Completely Surround And Tower Over The Man And The Monument Made Of Logs |

The last Annual Provincial Rifle Association Matches held in July, 1914 at St. Charles Rifle Range before "The Guns of August", Winnipeg, Manitoba. |
St. Charles was the 6th rifle range built in Winnipeg, Manitoba, and is 9 miles west of the city centre, 1/2 mile north and 1/2 mile west, of Assiniboia Downs Racetrack. In the photo are hardy worker pioneers with family. Note one of the men has traded hats with the woman and the baby is playing with the rifle. The men have $25.00 Mark II Ross Rifles in an era when a man worked 14 hours a day for $1.00. So the purchase of a new Canadian-made Ross Rifle from Quebec required considerable thought. Note the Martin target aperture receiver sight and eyepiece on the Rifle. The competition between the Canadian Ross Rifle and the British Long Lee Enfield at $18.25 (proven in the Boer War) raged on at the St. Charles Range. The rapid rate For The .303" Ross MK II with 5 round Harris Box Magazine was 5 shots aimed, in 40 seconds; for the Lee Enfield it was 10 shots in 40 seconds. A staff sergeant is on the left. |

United Empire Loyalists Families Landing At Mouth Of The St. John River. There They Built Parrtown Which Later Became Saint John, New Brunswick. Note The Log Cabin Being Built Inland. Until The Arrival Of The United Empire Loyalists, The Population Of Canada Was Mainly French. Thousands Of Loyalists Came From The Thirteen Colonies (Later The United States) And Started Settlements In What Are Now New Brunswick, Nova Scotia, Prince Edward Island, Ontario And Quebec. Lord Dorchester Ordained The Letters "Ue" Be Affixed To The Names Of Families Who Had Adhered To The Unity Of The Empire, And Joined The Royal Standard In America Before The Treaty Of Separation In 1783. The Loyalty To Britain Of The Loyalists Was Not Provided For In The Peace Treaty Of 1783 And Many Had To Abandon Their Possessions And Start A New Life To The North. Image From A Painting By J.D.
