Winnipeg Police Stood Guard During The Strike Which Began March 29, 1906, When Some 240 Motormen And Conductors Of The Winnipeg Electric Street Railway Walked Out, Demanding Better Wages And Working Conditions. They Were Working 10 Hours, Six Days Of The Week, With No Cars Running Sundays. Among Their Demands Was A Raise In Pay To Minimum Of 23 Cents An Hour For New Men And 27 Cents For Those With Experience. The Military Had To Be Called Out To Assist The Bobbies During Scenes Of Violence Such As Never Before Witnessed In Winnipeg. Mayor Thomas Sharpe Read The Riot Act At The Corner Of Main And Higgins, Surrounded By A Military Detachment Drawn Up In A Square And Equipped With A Machine Gun. Finally The Ministerial Association Of Winnipeg Sent A "Peace Mission" To Negotiate With The Strikers, Who Accepted One Cent An Hour More, Instead Of The Two Cents Requested.
