A Man Is Standing With A Gun At The Site Of The "Reference Monument" Raised By David Thompson (British) On July 24 (Or 29), 1824, On The Most North Westerly Point Of Lake Of The Woods. The Surveyors Had Great Difficulty In Finding That Spot. This Site Was Designated By Treaty Of Ghent As Key To Boundary Between British North America (Canada) & The American States (Usa). The Site Was Endorsed By The Joint Boundary Commissioners On October 26, 1826. In The Formal Search By The Boundary Commission Of 1872, The Remnants Were Found In A Swamp On October 17, 1872 And The Famous Corner Was Commemorated As Shown Beside The Man. The Bushes At The Site Completely Surround And Tower Over The Man And The Monument Made Of Logs |

Personnel of the British North American Boundary Commission 1873-1874. During 1873 and 1874 an Anglo-American commission surveyed and marked the boundary between Canada and the United States from Lake of the Woods to the Rocky Mountains. The trails and the supply depots established by the boundary commission were used by the NWMP on the first part of their trek westward in the summer of 1874. Among the personnel shown are: Captain D.R. Comeron (seated 3rd from the left) the British Commissioner; L.W. Herchmer (standing 4th from the Left) the Commissions Commissionary who was later commissioner of the NWMP from 1886-1900; and G.M. Dawson (standing 6th from the left) who in spite of a physical deformity was to become one of Canada's outstanding geologists and explorers. |
