June 21, About 3:45 Pm, As Special Constables Armed With Clubs Marched To Clear The Streets, Some Members Of The Crowd Set Fire To A Streetcar. Special Constables Are Stationed Across The Street To Prevent Crowds From Returning & To Guard The Volunteer Firemen Trying To Put Out Fire In Streetcar. One Former Special Constable Recalls, "There Were Several Hundred University Students Who Had Been Recuited As Night Watchmen...And We Got Drawn Into This. The Specials Were Kept In The Rupert Street Police Station Until After The Mounted Police Had Formed Up. The Mounties Were Well Ahead Of Us, And Had Already Shot. We Could See Them Coming Back, About Two Or Three Blocks Towards Portage And Main From Us... We Came Out, And Marched From Our Building Clear Across Main Street To The City Hall." |

Winnipeg Police Patrolling The Street In Front Of Bank Of Hamilton, Main Street, Winnipeg. Note Crowds On Sidewalk During The Street Railway Strike. Winnipeg Police Stood Guard During The Strike Which Began March 29, 1906, When Some 240 Motormen And Conductors Of The Winnipeg Electric Street Railway Walked Out, Demanding Better Wages And Working Conditions. They Were Working 10 Hours, Six Days Of The Week, With No Cars Running Sundays. Among Their Demands Was A Raise In Pay To Minimum Of 23 Cents An Hour For New Men And 27 Cents For Those With Experience. The Military Had To Be Called Out To Assist The Bobbies During Scenes Of Violence Such As Never Before Witnessed In Winnipeg. Mayor Thomas Sharpe Read The Riot Act At The Corner Of Main And Higgins, Surrounded By A Military Detachment Drawn Up In A Square And Equipped With A Machine Gun. Finally The Ministerial Association Of Winnipeg Sent A "Peace Mission" To Negotiate With The Strikers, Who Accepted One Cent An Hour More, Instead Of The Two Cents Requested. But Working Conditions Improved Considerable |
