Fire At The Winnipeg Theatre Which Was Built In 1883 At Adelaide Street & Notre Dame Avenue, Winnipeg, By Thomas J. Mccrossan And Named Victoria Hall. The Stage Was At The East End Of The Building, The Entrance On The West Side Of The Building On Notre Dame Avenue. The Fire Was Reported About 10:30am And A Few Minutes Later Firemen From Fire Halls #1 And #2 Were On The Scene. Chief Buchanan Arrived And Shortly After The Roof Fell In. Realizing The Building Was Doomed, He Ordered His Men Outside And They Complied Fighting The Flames All The Way When The Front Wall Collapsed Killing Three Firemen And Trapping Others In The Vestibule And Foyer. By This Time 100 Firemen Were On The Scene And Strenuous Effort Was Made To Fight The Flames With Water Being Poured Into The Building From All Directions. At 11:30am A Large Section Of The South And West Wall Fell In At Notre Dame And Charlotte,Sending Up A Cloud Of Fire And Smoke At The Adelaide Street Side. As Soon As The Wall Had Fallen Every Effort Was Made By The Firemen To Succour Their Comrades. The Police Ambulance Took The Injured To The Hospital To Be Examined. In All 4 Men Died And 9 Others Were Injured. Fire Commissioner Mcgrath Opened A Probe To Ascertain The Cause Of The Fire In One Of Winnipeg'S Old Landmarks |

Silas Alward (Al) Cheesman, pilot and engineer, born at St. John, New Brunswick, on May 14, 1900, died April 2, 1958 in Fort William, Ontario, seen on the right at Hudson, Ontario, with a Fokker Universal G-CAFU. He left school at 14 years to work as a machinist and then went into business for himself. He was a Port Arthur Alderman, 1937-1938. His most memorable exploits in the air were a south polar trip to the Antarctic in the fall of 1929 with Australian Explorer Sir Hubert Wilkins, and a flight in search for 6 Russian Airmen lost in an arctic flight from Russia to the USA in 1937. He was chief pilot in charge of Maintainance Work of name planes. He started flying with Aero Marine Airways in USA as a mechanic after the War. He flew on fisheries patrol in 1931, and was the pilot of Fokker Universal G CAIX when it crashed at Elk Lake, Ontario. Rather than wait he repaired the damaged plane with practically no facilities except those available in the bush and flew the plane out to Hudson, Ontario. In 1932, he took up residence in Port Arthur and bought explorers airways which operated in the Canadian North. He joined the RCAF in 1940 as an AC2, oficer in charge of all flying at No.8 bombing and gunnery school at Lethbridge, Alberta. |

The fire engine is coated in ice, as is the ladder a firefighter is climbing, at the scene after a fire at Dingwall building, 62 Albert Street, Winnipeg, Manitoba. |
The Winnipeg Firefighters fought the blaze all night on February 3, 1921 in 20-below-zero weather. William McIllhago of No. 1 Firehall died in an explosion on the fifth floor of the building. Leslie Shewan of No. 3 Firehall was taken to the hospital suffering from the effects of gas. He did recover. |
