Earl Grey School, the first Junior High school in Canada. |
The school (named after Canada's Governor-General from 1904 - 1911) was actually opened as a Grades 1 - 8 school in 1915. After only 4 years it was changed to a Junior High school. After Grade VI the classes were segregated into all boys' or all girls' classes. The Grade IX graduating class on the steps Of Earl Grey School. Photo from a postcard. People dressed in Voyageur costume and one in aboriginal ceremonial headdress are standing on the steps on either side of the main building entrance. The card is postmarked February 16, 1922 in Winnipeg with a cancelled 2 cent stamp. The short message on the postcard reads, "Dear Margaret, this shows the crowning of the Carnival Queen Miss Hazel Tomkins. Your friend, Marjorie." The addressee is Miss Margaret Swail, Hoey Post Office, Hoey, Saskatchewan. |
