description:	A Metis Man And His Ox-Drawn Red River Cart In Front Of J.P. Carr, Jeweller Store And A.C. Perry Bookseller Stationary Store On Main Street, Winnipeg, Mb. In The Back Of The Cart Could Be The Metis' Wife And Child. Note The Harness On The Ox. Metis Red River Cart Was Constructed Simply With Wooden Hubs And Axles That Were Never Greased Since Dust Would Gather In Greased Parts And Quickly Wear Down The Wooden Parts. At First The Wheels Were Made Of One Solid Piece; Later Spokes Were Used. The Wheels Were "Dished" For Greater Stability. The Squeal Of The Grinding Wood Axle And Hub Could Be Heard For Miles.Three Men Are Standing In The Doorways Of Stores

Son Of Isidore Dumont & Louise Framboise, Both Half- Breeds. Took No Part In Red River Uprisings Of 1870 But Following Rebellion Moved To Batoche On Banks Of Saskatchewan River. He Became Head Of The Metis Community There & Organized The Great Buffalo Hunts. He Was Was One Of The 4- Man Delegation Who Rode To Montana To Bring Louis Riel Back To Canada In 1884. He Joined Riel'S Provisional Government As Adjutant General. The Rebellion Of 1885 Broke Out In March When His "Army" A Detachment Of Nwmp Under Superintendent Crozier At Duck Lake, After Preliminary Skirmish At Fish Creek In April The Metis Under Dumont Were Finally Defeated In May At Batoche By Greatly Superior Forces Under General Middleton. Dumont Fled To Montana & Lived Several Years In Various Parts Of The Usa Until The Granting Of An Amnesty Allowed Him To Return To The Vicinity Of Batoche. He Married Madelaine Weldey A Scottish Half-Breed

title:	Georges Racette, a Metis man, in traditional Metis dress with floral embroidery on coat.
description:	Known as "the Shaman", George was born in the Red River Settlement in 1819. He was over six feet tall, a skilled hunter, fighter, horseman, and trader. He was known as a rogue and a troublemaker, yet he played a key role in the significant events of his time. In 1873 he and others established a council in the Qu'appelle Valley with the intention of establishing a government. Since they were uneducated men they awaited the arrival of Louis Riel to assist them. In 1873 at James McKay's request, he spent the Winter travelling among the American Metis and aboroginals who planned to enter Canada to join forces with Canadian Metis and aboriginals in an effort to push white settlement from the plains. Shaman advised them that they could find themselves unwelcome in both countries and obtained their signatures and their promise to remain south of the border in the USA. In 1874 he represented the Assiniboine at the negotiations of Treaty No. 4. His display of military strength and his strong position during the negotiations led to his being overpowered, handcuffed, and kept under guard in a tent during the proceedings. He was released only when he promised to leave the area.

Was Provicial Secretary In March 1875 And The Next Year Became Minister Of Public Works. He Formed The New Goverment And Held The Offices Of Premier, President Of The Executive Council And Provincial Treasurer. He Was Appointed Railway Commmissioner On Sept 1886.At The Time Of His Death He Was The Only Mla Who Had Continuously Held A Seat In The Legislative Assembly Since Its Inception. He Spoke Fluently In English, French, Cree And Saulteaux. He Was A Member Of The Manitoba Club, The Anglican Synod And Exec Committee Of Rupertsland. He Was Part Scotch. He Died On July 5, 1889. For Long-Lasting Storage And Transportation, The Dried Meat Pounded Into Powder Was Poured Into Bags Made Of Uncured Buffalo Hides. description:	Poundmaker. Until the battle of Cut Knife Creek, May 2nd, 1885, Poundmaker had been able to prevent his braves from joining the Metis but after his defeat of Otter's Troops he could no longer control their War Spirit. On May 26th, 1885, Poundmaker surrendered to General Middleton at Battleford, Saskatchewan. He was tried before Judge Richardson at Regina, Sasakatchewan in September, 1885, and was sentenced to three years at Stony Mountain. Poundmaker, also known as "The Drummer," was born a member of the Stoney Tribe (Saskatchewan) in c1842, but through his mother's family became associated with a Cree band near Battleford, Saskatchewan. Originally opposed to Treaty No. 6 in 1876, he later signed, but his disgruntlement with government in action on aboriginal needs was made evident when his band ransacked Battleford in 1885. He died in 1886 while visiting his adoptive father, Crowfoot, on the Blackfoot reserve.

Sitting At Right Is Julie Lagimodiere, Mother Of Henriette Riel (And Louis Riel Not In Photo). Sitting On The Floor Are Angelique Riel (Born 1883, Died 1894) And Her Brother Jean Riel (Born 1882, Died 1908), The Orphan Children Of Louis Riel And Marguerite Monet. After The Execution Of Louis Riel In November, 1885, His Wife Marguerite Passed Away Six Months Later In May, 1886. Their Deaths Left Their Two Children Orphans In The Care Of Their Grandmother, Julie Lagimodiere. Julie'S Daughter Henriette Also Helped In The Care Of The Children. Julie Raised Her Grandson As Jean Monet (His Mother'S Maiden Name) To Protect Him From Any Prejudices Because Of Who His Father Was (Louis Riel)

description:	Three Metis Men At Island Lake, Mb, Mixing Mud And Straw With Their Feet. The Mud Is Mixed With Straw & Used To Plaster Over The Logs In Walls And Improve Insulation. To Begin This Task, First A Hole Is Dug In The Ground To Get Below The Topsoil; Then The Hole Is Filled With Water And Selected Clay Is Added. The Men Mix This With Their Feet, Getting A Good Consistency With The Mud. Too Dense A Consistency Would Not Allow The Straw To Mix Well In The Mud And Too Thin Would Not Be Good Either Because It Would Lack Stability. A Fence And A Building Are Behind The Men
